Crafting the Sound of Myth: My Experience with Twilight of the Gods

Working on Zak Snyder's latest animated series, Twilight of the Gods, has been one of the most creatively fulfilling projects of my career in sound design. From the moment I heard about this ambitious retelling of Norse mythology, I knew I had to be a part of it. And once I joined the team, I was thrilled to dive into a world brimming with gods, giants, magic, and epic battles.

The show is an auditory feast, and crafting the soundscapes for its eight episodes was an adventure all its own. Each environment we travel through in the series needed a unique sonic identity, and that’s where the real fun began.

Crafting Unique Soundscapes for New Worlds

One of the greatest joys of this project was spending time sculpting the sound for each distinct environment. In Twilight of the Gods, the characters journey across a variety of landscapes—from the icy peaks of Jotunheim to the fiery depths of Muspelheim, and even into mystical realms like Valhalla and beyond. Each setting had to feel alive, immersive, and otherworldly, so I worked meticulously to create sonic backdrops that would transport viewers directly into these mythological lands.

In Jotunheim, the sounds of howling winds, creaking ice, and distant avalanches combine to create a sense of cold isolation. In contrast, Muspelheim’s infernal soundscape is filled with roaring flames, crackling lava, and the ever-present rumble of volcanic activity. For the quieter, more serene moments in Asgard and Valhalla, I focused on ethereal tones and reverberant spaces that evoke the grandeur and beauty of the gods' domains. The diversity of these environments allowed me to experiment with new techniques and approaches, pushing the boundaries of what I could do with sound.

Magic and Myth Brought to Life

What’s a Norse epic without magic? One of the most exciting challenges was designing the sound for the magic in the show. Whether it was a god summoning lightning or a sorcerer casting an ancient spell, I had the freedom to craft entirely original sonic elements for each magical moment. This was one of the most fun parts of the project—blending traditional sound effects with synthesized tones and unexpected elements to create something truly unique.

For example, Thor's thunderous hammer strikes had to feel powerful and divine, while Loki’s mischievous illusions needed to sound more subtle and otherworldly. Each character’s magic had its own signature sound, reflecting their personality and the type of power they wield.

I particularly loved creating the sound for some of the darker, more mysterious magic in the series. Spells that warp reality or summon creatures from the void allowed me to experiment with more abstract and unsettling sounds. This freedom to explore and experiment kept the process exciting from start to finish.

A Creative Journey Like No Other

Overall, working on Twilight of the Gods has been a dream come true for me as a sound designer. The opportunity to help build an entire mythological world from the ground up, filled with diverse environments and magical moments, was a deeply rewarding experience. I had a blast pushing the creative boundaries and bringing Zak Snyder’s vision to life through sound.

I can’t wait for everyone to watch the series and experience the sonic world we’ve created. Whether it’s the thunderous roar of battle or the eerie silence before a spell is cast, I hope the soundscapes transport viewers into this epic world as much as they did for me while creating them.
